Broadband and Mobile in Ireland: The Latest from ComReg’s Q2 2025 Report

ComReg’s latest Quarterly Key Data Report for April to June 2025, gives us a great snapshot of how Ireland’s broadband and mobile landscape is shaping up with faster speeds, more fibre, and a lot more data being used.

Broadband
Fibre Leads the Way

Fixed broadband connections in Ireland have hit 1.72 million active lines in the second quarter of 2025, up nearly 3% compared to this time last year. The big story is fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), which now accounts for more than half of all connections (56%) which is a jump from 46% in 2024.

The coverage of Fibre is expanding quickly and is now available to nearly 79% of all premises. Some counties like Longford and Westmeath lead the way with 94% fibre to premises coverage, and Westmeath tops them all for gigabit coverage at 96%.

Mobile
More Subscriptions, More Data

On the mobile side of things, there are now 10.6 million subscriptions in Ireland, and most people (about 77%) are on bill pay plans. 5G is really taking off with 2.16 million people that are signed up, which is a big jump of 26% in just a year.

Our habits are shifting as well. Texting is slowly fading out, while data usage just keeps climbing. The average person now gets through almost 20 GB of data every month, which is 20% more than in 2024. As for calls, those are holding steady, with people chatting for around 152 minutes a month.

Data Usage Keeps Growing

Irish households have seen an increase in data usage, where on average residential broadband line carried 498 GB of data per month, that’s a 15% jump compared to last year. Businesses are using less overall, at 354.5 GB per month, but that’s still 9% more year-on-year.

Speed is becoming the norm, too. Almost 7 in 10 fixed broadband users now have connections of 500 Mbps or faster, while one in five are enjoying gigabit speeds.

A Connected Ireland

The clear trend we are seeing is that Ireland is moving rapidly towards high-speed fibre and data-heavy lifestyles. People expect reliable, fast connections at home, at work, and on the go, and the demand will only keep rising as more services move online.

ComReg has also launched a new Open Data Map Hub, where you can explore broadband coverage and take-up levels across the country. It’s a handy way to see what’s happening in your county or local area.

We’re proud to play our part in powering Ireland’s digital future with super-fast, reliable broadband. Whether you’re streaming, working from home, or running a business, our broadband services are built to deliver the speed and stability you need.

While data use continues to rise, it’s worth remembering that small choices can make a difference for sustainability, for example, sharing links to documents and photos rather than large attachments helps ease the load on data centres.
