There have been recent changes implemented into the Registry Lock service provided by The .IE Registry, providing one of the most robust forms of protection for .ie domain names even greater security.
These include changes to:
- Internal processes
- Automated 24-hour relocking of the Registry Lock service
- Operational resilience
- High-magnitude domain list introduced to identify domains which could greatly benefit from the Registry Lock service.
These updates are the initial phase of the .IE Registry’s intentions to renew the Registry Lock service, with future plans of creating a better and more automated process in collaboration with other ccTLD registries.

So, what is Registry Lock?
Registry Lock is an extra form of protection that comes at the registry level (.ie) as opposed to using just your registrar account protection (Blacknight).
If Registry Lock is active, then any modification of the domain is not possible without going through extra verification. It means that no transfer of the domain, change of nameserver, and other changes can be done using just the registrar account.
Even if your registrar account was compromised, Registry Lock is meant to stop any changes until verification is done.
Why is this important?
Your domain name is more than just the web address of your website. It underpins many of the services your organisation relies on every day to function, including emails, customer portals, online applications, and other systems critical to function. If a domain is changed without authorisation, it can result in service disruption, email outages, and potential damage to customer trust and business operations to say the least.
