On 26 January 2026, we’ll be upgrading the database software on our new shared hosting platform (Plesk / cPanel). This is a routine upgrade and is required to keep the platform secure, stable, and up to date.
Why this matters
Some older versions of WordPress are not compatible with the newer database version.
- WordPress 6.1 and earlier are affected
- If your site remains on one of these versions, parts of the site may stop working correctly after the upgrade
This change only affects sites hosted on our new shared hosting platform and does not apply to other Blacknight hosting platforms.
What you need to do
To avoid any disruption, please update WordPress before 26 January 2026.
Step 1: Check your WordPress version
- Log in to your WordPress admin area
- Go to Dashboard → Updates
- Your current WordPress version is shown at the top of the page
Step 2: Update WordPress
- If your site is running WordPress 6.1 or earlier, update WordPress to the latest available version
- If you have more than one WordPress site on this platform, please check and update each one
Keeping WordPress, plugins, and themes up to date is important for security and compatibility.
What happens if I don’t update?
If your site is still running WordPress 6.1 or earlier at the time of the database upgrade, you may see errors or unexpected behaviour until WordPress is updated.
We’re giving advance notice so you have plenty of time to update and avoid any issues.
Frequently asked questions
Does this affect all my Blacknight hosting services?
No. This notice only applies to WordPress sites hosted on our new shared hosting platform (Plesk / cPanel).
Will Blacknight update WordPress for me?
We’re happy to guide you through the process or advise on next steps, but updates are normally carried out by you or your developer.
I’m not sure how to update WordPress — can you help?
Yes. Our support team is happy to help point you in the right direction if you’re unsure how to check or update WordPress.
Why is this change happening?
Keeping database software up to date is essential for security, reliability, and performance. Older WordPress versions are no longer tested against newer database versions.
