We offer a crazy number of domain name extensions these days. So it’s only natural that there are some domains that really resonate with me and others that simply leave me cold.

One of the domain extensions that I really like is .blog.

Why?

Because it does what it says on the tin!

If you’re a blogger, be that for fun or for business, then you might be using something like yourblogname.blogspot.ie or yourbloggingname.wordpress.com

There’s nothing wrong with that, but you’re never going to be in control of your own destiny. And if branding matters to you then you really should get your own domain name so that you can maintain a consistent brand and maintain some modicum of control over it all. (Think business cards, email addresses and more)

Sure, you could upgrade to a .com or a .ie and of course you still can, but neither domain extension really tells anyone what kind of content you’ll find on that site. With a .blog domain name, however, it’s pretty damn obvious! It’ll be a blog of some kind.

I’ve always been a firm believer in “eating your own dog food”, so both myself and the company were early adopters of .blog domain names.

We managed to get not one, but two of the first 100 .blog domain names, which is really cool! (Well I think it’s really cool!!)  So we get to display this nice little badge in the sidebar:

I switched my personal blog over to michele.blog, while we switched the company one over to its current home, namely blacknight.blog.

Did we take a “hit” on our SEO?

Not really. With both sites we set up 301 redirects to point the old links to the new ones and from what we can see it looks like Google was quite happy to re-spider and re-index both sites under their new domain names.

So why am I talking about this today?

We recently dropped the price on 1st year registration of .blog domain names to a mere €9.99 (ex-VAT). So what are you waiting for??
