If you are an existing Blacknight client you may be aware of the pending upgrade that will be carried out early next week (see our status site for more details).
In simple terms, there is a major hosting upgrade going in next Monday morning (hopefully before most people are in their offices).
A lot of the changes are “under the hood” and won’t be obvious to our clients. So I’ve gone through the documentation and spoken to our CTO and come up with a few key points:
- MS SQL 2008
- Qmail
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2010
- SharePoint
- Bug fixes
MS SQL 2008 will be “possible” after the upgrade. I’m not sure how quickly we’ll be offering it, but the system will support it, so we will roll it out as quickly as we can.
Qmail, which handles email on our shared hosting, isn’t changing dramatically, but some of the options and how they are displayed are being tweaked and improved. I’m also informed that several bugs have been resolved.
Support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 will mean that we’ll be able to upgrade our existing clients so that the new features will be made available.
While the current setup supports SharePoint, the upgrade means that we will be able to offer a more cohesive experience with SharePoint hosting.
There are also a LOT of bug fixes and tweaks – some of them on the user side, others on the admin side ..

Hello there, will these upgrades mean that there will be any improvement in the speed of the Webmail service? It’s so slow that it’s practically unusable.
Webmail speed and the general uptime of the e-mail services are the biggest issues that I’ve been having with Blacknight over the past 12 months. Hopefully these upgrades will have a substantially beneficial effect on both.

We are currently using a version of AtMail that may not be as fast as it could be. We’re currently trying to find out when the system will support the newer version, which will also resolve a couple of issues related to some browsers, such as Chrome.
