The €100 We Never Think Twice About

Business owners always keep an eye on costs, compare prices, look for better value, and question every expense because that’s simply part of running a successful business.

But sometimes it’s worth asking a different question. Are we comparing the cost… or are we comparing the value?

The €100 we never think twice about. Spending €100 on dinner for two, a few subscriptions, or a few everyday purchases doesn’t usually feel like a big deal. We spend it, enjoy it, and move on without giving it much thought. But spend that same €100 on your business, and suddenly we stop and think. Is it worth it? Do we really need it? What will we get back?

It’s an interesting way of looking at value.

Looking beyond the price tag

That same €100 could give your business a .com domain, website hosting and a professional email address for an entire year. That’s not just another bill but your business’s online identity. It’s where customers find you, learn about what you do, see if you are trustworthy and decide whether you’re the right business for them.

  • One purchase gives you a memorable evening.
  • The other represents your business every hour of every day.

While you’re out enjoying dinner, your website is still working. It’s answering questions, showcasing your products or services, helping customers find your contact details and quietly building trust with people who may have never heard of your business before.

It doesn’t finish at five o’clock. It doesn’t take weekends off. It doesn’t take holidays. It simply keeps working, twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year.

When you look at it like that, it’s hard to think of many other investments that work as consistently for such a relatively small cost.

The Smallest Business Expense Can Make the Biggest First Impression

Regardless of the registration or renewal price for a domain, compared with almost every other cost involved in running a business, it’s one of the smallest line items on the budget.

Yet it’s one of the first things customers notice:
– Your website is often your first conversation with a potential customer.
– Your email address is often your first handshake.
– Your domain name is the sign above your digital front door.

Before someone ever contacts you, they’ve already started forming an opinion about your business.

Your Online Presence Shapes First Impressions

Today’s customer journey almost always starts online.

Before someone calls you, sends an enquiry or walks through your door, they’ve usually searched for you first. Increasingly, they’re asking ChatGPT, Google Gemini and other AI assistants for recommendations instead of relying solely on search engines.

These tools rely on the information they can find online. Your website, your domain name, your content and your customer reviews all help create the digital picture of your business. The stronger and more complete that picture is, the easier it is for both people and technology to understand who you are and what you do.

This means your website isn’t simply sitting on the internet but actively representing your business every hour of every day.

Your Website Is the Only Part of the Internet You Truly Own

Social media is brilliant for reaching people, building a community and promoting your business. But it’s worth remembering that you’re building on someone else’s platform.

You don’t control the algorithm, the rules or who sees your content. We constantly see businesses frustrated because a post has been removed, their reach suddenly drops, or an account gets restricted. Sometimes it can feel completely arbitrary, but ultimately, you’re playing by someone else’s rules and those rules can change anytime.

Your website is different. It’s your digital home. You decide what goes on it, how it looks and how people interact with your business. That doesn’t mean you should ignore social media. Use it to get attention and build relationships. Use advertising and AI search to help people discover you. But wherever people find you, the goal should be to bring them back to somewhere you control: your website.

It’s All About Perspective

Every business has bills to pay. There’s the rent, the electricity, insurance, software, accounting fees, stock, equipment and all the other costs that come with keeping things moving. Then there are the costs that help people find and trust you like your website, your domain and your professional email.

When you look at it that way, a domain or website renewal is just another small part of running your business. And while it might be easy to question a €100 or €200 bill when it lands, the better question is what that expense is actually doing for you. Your website could be bringing in enquiries. Your domain could be how customers find you. Your email address could be the first impression someone has of your business.

So when that renewal email arrives, don’t just ask, “Do I want to spend this money?” But rather ask, “What am I getting from having it?”

Because sometimes, the smallest bill on your balance sheet delivers the biggest value.
