Any .ie domain that is more than 45 days overdue will enter a redemption period, during which an additional restore fee is required to renew the domain, in line with the policy implemented by the registry on August 1st 2025. We all forget things sometimes but don’t worry, you still have a chance to get your domain back before it’s gone for good. This extra chance is called the Redemption Period.
How It Works
When a .ie domain expires, it goes through a few steps:
- 45-Day Grace Period: For the first 45 days after expiry, you can renew your domain as usual. No extra fees, no stress.
- Redemption Period (~30 Days): If you miss the grace period, your domain goes into redemption. It won’t work for your website or email, but you can still restore it.
- Pending Delete (~5 Days): After redemption, the domain enters a short pending delete phase. Once this is over, the domain is released to the public and anyone can register it.
Restore Fee at Blacknight
Since the .IE Registry introduced a restore fee in August 2025 for domains in the redemption period, Blacknight now charges a €90 restore fee, along with the standard renewal cost, if your domain reaches that stage.
The good news is that you’re fully in control. You can pay both the renewal and restore fee straight through your Blacknight Control Panel, no need to get in touch unless you’d like a hand. Once the payment is done, we’ll handle the restore request for you and get your domain back up and running.
How to Avoid Extra Fees
A few simple things can save you money and stress:
- Turn on auto-renew for your domains.
- Keep your payment and contact info up to date.
- Add a calendar reminder for your renewal date.
What to Do If Your Domain Has Expired
- Within 45 days of expiry? Renew as normal with no extra fees.
- In the redemption period? Renew your domain in your Control Panel or Contact Us.
- In pending delete? Recovery isn’t possible, but we can help monitor the domain in case it becomes available again.
Your .ie domain is more than just a web address. It’s your brand, your business, and your online identity. A little foresight goes a long way.
