Press Release: Blacknight Signs Declaration of Internet Freedom

I mentioned the Declaration of Internet Freedom over on Technology.ie recently. We signed it as soon as I was made aware of the declaration, but there was a bit of a backlog in the organisers processing signatures.

We issued the press release below today on our signing of the declaration and our rationale for doing so.

Blacknight Signs Declaration of Internet Freedom

July 11, 2012 – Carlow, Ireland – Progressive Irish domain registrar and hosting company Blacknight add their stamp to the Declaration of Internet Freedom.

During a time when citizens and corporations across the globe are fighting harmful legislation that aims to censor and limit online freedoms, Blacknight joins a long list of companies and individuals who are committed to keeping the Internet open. The Declaration of Internet Freedom which can be found at http://www.internetdeclaration.org/freedom provides that the Internet remain free, open, uncensored, private, affordable and innovative.

Michele Neylon of Blacknight sums up the problem: “ We are going through a period where there are significant threats to the open Internet, with several countries attempting to introduce legislation that would impede the freedom of Internet use. It is the responsibility of Internet watchmen, business owners and users to remain vigilant and send a message that we will not stand by and let the open Internet be threatened.”

The Preamble to the Declaration explains: “We believe that a free and open Internet can bring about a better world. To keep the Internet free and open, we call on communities, industries and countries to recognize these principles. We believe that they will help to bring about more creativity, more innovation and more open societies. We are joining an international movement to defend our freedoms because we believe that they are worth fighting for.”
Neylon continues: “ Blacknight has always been very involved in the rights and protection of our customers and end users. We agree very strongly with the Declaration of Internet Freedoms and are proud to add our names to the list of companies and individuals who support the open Internet.”
Other signatories include Amnesty International, Cheezburger Inc. and author Neil Gaiman.
