At Blacknight, we believe that running a technology company should never come at the cost of our environment. Every website hosted, every email sent, and every business powered through our services carries a responsibility to operate sustainably. That’s why we’re proud to announce our solar installation at our Carlow headquarters, a significant investment in clean energy, our community, and the future of Ireland’s digital landscape.
What This Means for Our Customers
This isn’t just about solar panels – it’s about impact. By generating an estimated 100,000–120,000kWh of renewable electricity each year, we’ll cover about 20% of our annual energy use directly on site.
For our customers, this means the digital services you rely on like your websites, domains, and cloud hosting are increasingly powered by clean, locally generated energy. Every kilowatt produced here in Carlow reduces our carbon footprint and strengthens our ability to provide resilient, future-proof services.
And with our AI-driven inverter and battery systems, we’ll be able to:
- Operate off-grid during peak times, ensuring continuity and efficiency.
- Actively participate in Grid Events, supporting Ireland’s wider energy stability.
In short: when you choose Blacknight, you’re choosing an Irish company that’s helping to green the internet while supporting the national grid.
The Solar Setup:
- Panels: 250 (a mix of 525W and 550W)
- Capacity: 127 kWp across two rooftops, tilted at 15°
- Storage: 5 x 12.06 kWh battery units for flexibility and backup
- Safety: G10 isolator installed for added protection
- Installer: Local experts Infinite Energy (our neighbours here in Carlow!)
By working with a local partner was important to us, keeping the project’s benefits in the community while building sustainable infrastructure for the future.
Building a Greener Digital Ireland
This project builds on the work we’ve already done to reduce our environmental impact:
- Our data centres are powered by 100% renewable energy from Irish wind, solar, and hydro.
- We’re signatories of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, committing to ambitious EU-wide sustainability goals.
- Our Carlow HQ already features EV charging stations, energy-efficient lighting, and biodiversity initiatives like our partnership with the Carlow Beekeepers Association.
Together, these efforts ensure that the digital economy we’re all part of grows in a way that is sustainable, resilient, and proudly Irish.
Looking Ahead
This is a clear signal: Blacknight is committed to doing business responsibly, investing in renewable energy, and supporting Ireland’s transition to a greener future.
For our customers, it means that the services you use every day are powered by a company that puts sustainability at the heart of its operations. For our community, it means investment in local expertise and infrastructure. For Ireland, it’s another step toward a cleaner, smarter energy future.
