ComReg, the Irish communications regulator, has issued its latest Q1 (Jan-Mar) quarterly report, and it shows that broadband connections in Ireland continue to show record growth.
According to the report, “Fixed broadband subscriber lines increased to 1.59 million, a 0.8% increase this quarter and an increase of 3.6% compared to Q1 2021. Of these, nearly 402k were fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) subscriber lines representing 25.3% of total fixed broadband subscriber lines in Q1 2022, up from 18.3% in Q1 2021.”
The rest of the data is fascinating too:
- According to Eurostat, Ireland’s household broadband penetration rate (including fixed and mobile broadband) in 2021 was at 93%, which is higher than the EU average of 90%.
- On a monthly basis an average fixed residential broadband subscriber line used 366.2 GB of data, a decrease of 8.5% since Q1 2021.
- In Q1 2022, approximately 51.7% of broadband subscriber lines had purchased broadband with speeds equal to or greater than 100Mbps, with 22.2% of all fixed broadband subscriber lines with purchased broadband speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps.
Irish consumers love broadband, and this data shows that if they have options available – they will pursue it, and fibre connections are growing. With the roll-out of NBI fibre broadband in rural Ireland, we expect these numbers to keep increasing as time goes on.
